Lately, the importance of promoting live music has been on my mind (mostly because of the Minnesota Orchestra musician lockout). I am just as guilty of wasting time on YouTube as anyone else. YouTube is great, but it will never be able to replace what live music does for people and for communities (try google searching "benefits of live music" if you are unconvinced!). I am constantly thinking about ways to promote live music, and for now the best way I can think of is to perform as much as possible and to make sure people around me know what I am up to. Let me know if you have more ideas of how to promote live music.
Here are two FREE concerts I am involved in this weekend. Please attend and bring people - especially people who haven't had many opportunities to hear live music:
University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestra - TODAY! Friday, October 11th at 7:30pm in Ted Mann Concert Hall
Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Weber
Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra
Beethoven's Symphony No. 8
Power of 10 - Saturday, October 12th at the Santorini in Eden Prairie, MN at 9pm
R&B, funk, dance, and more commercial music
There are always plenty of opportunities to hear live music if you live in the Twin Cities area. Don't miss out!
I had the opportunity to attend a performance in St. Paul today that has been sold out for quite some time. The program featured the Pacifica Quartet and included clarinetist Anthony McGill for the Mozart Quintet and the Brahms Quintet in B Minor. Anthony McGill is the principal clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. I have his CD and am fascinated by his very refined sound. Hearing him live was even more impressive. It is difficult trying to find words to describe his sound, but it is very legato, even, and focused, which worked very well for the quintets. I also had the opportunity to briefly meet him afterwards. I would encourage listeners to check out his CD (which is also on iTunes and Spotify), or hear him live if you have the opportunity.
Eric Schultz is currently serving on several music faculties in the New York Metro while performing and maintaining a private music studio teaching clarinet, saxophone, and flute to all ages. He completed his doctorate in music performance at Stony Brook University.
